Fulfillment of external mandates to provide access for disabled visitors does not address deeper issues of inequity and segregation. Dustin Gibson and Simi Linton provide a framework for building a more integrated and equitable organization, evident in programming and practices, audience engagement, the art produced, and the artists who make work there. We will discuss access at the nexus of ableism and racism, and access as an artistic practice across the arts.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify contemporary definitions of ableism and racism, their connectedness, historical roots and relevance to workings of arts organizations
- Determine ways your organization can incorporate artistic approaches to access, consonant with the art presented and with the ethos of the institution
- Identify and implement practices that can foster integration, representation, and engagement of disabled visitors and artists
Closed Captions and ASL interpretation will be made available for this session.
This project is created in partnership with Mid Atlantic Arts, and is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
